We tried Schmalz ohne Schwein from the German vegetarian online magazine vegetarisch-einkaufen.de last week.

Schmalz ohne Schwein

This is a tasty spread for bread using fried onions and apples. It’s slightly sweet, but also with a “fat-ish” content, so that it can easily be spread. It tastes similar to those nice dried fried onions that you can buy in Asian stores. This recipe makes a lot. We had 3 small jars full, which will last us about 3 weeks of making sandwiches.

The recipe is in German. It calls for about 1/4 cup of coconut oil, 3 onions, I used 2 apples, 2 tablespoons of thyme and 1 tablespoon of marjoram.
